Chapter 73

A gangster and provocateur.

A note in a criminal case:

"Saul, cancel today's meeting at East 13th. The guys said that there may be troubles. The union agreed with the gang. We need to get a big guard for you."

Police witness statement:

"He was about to enter the club, when suddenly two people grabbed him and threw him into the car, and two more with revolvers held the people. And they took him away. We called the police, but what could it change?

What a resident, an elder Rothstein, told in kibbutz Kfar ha-Horesh:

"Dutchman Schultz, he was terribly proud of his appearance. Such a stately blue-eyed blond. That's why he wore all sorts of cheap things, believing that his appearance did not need fashionable rags. By the way, he was a terrible miser; everyone knew that. He could kill for five cents. No Irish dared to cross his path.

He was seven years older than Alinsky. But he did not know anything about Alinsky till a certain moment, i.e. until Alinsky reached out with his propaganda to the enterprises and unions that Schultz oversaw. Well, or racketeered. Or patronized them. You can say it in many ways.

Prohibition was abolished, bootlegging ended, the guys began to look for other businesses, so they raked under themselves also trade unions as well.

Prosecutor Thomas Dewey, the most famous watchdog of Justice for those, who remember, had arrested Schultz many times and counting, and he had even brought him to trials three times. Yet blond Schultz had always slipped out. Then they gave me twenty-three years, yet released me after nineteen, and I came here, but you already know that ...

Schultz could kill anyone as nothing to do, but others began quickly doing it for him. Well, then the bosses there threw greenery in order to get rid of Alinsky – he incited hard workers and trade unionists how to gnaw out their bucks more adroitly. A lot of money was at stake.

There was no kidnapping there: it all was just gossip. He was buying a newspaper at a kiosk. A guy passed by, took out the barrel, shot him in the back of the head and went on. One second. No one flinched, everything was as usual.

What the rabbi of Sharay Zedek Synagogue in Brooklyn said thirteen years after the incident:

"I knew the Flegenheimer family. The father of Arthur had a saloon, and he also had his stable, he was a very worthy person, making good donations. And the father once talked to me about that case, we had a good relationship.

Arthur told his father that he did not want to kill a Jew, especially for some lousy money. He already had a lot of money, he wasn't greedy by nature, he was just a man of principle: if you owe, give it back. If Alinsky were a different person, he, the legendary man, the Dutch Schultz would have even saved him and paid for it – just in order that a good man would remain alive. However, that Saul Alinsky was the devil: he taught how to destroy America.

And old Flegenheimer said: to destroy America, which gave shelter to all the Jews who fled from that damned anti-Semitic Russia? America, where we began to live as normal people? Where does he lead to? When his disciples destroy America so that poverty and lawlessness set in also here, who will be beaten, Arthur? Don't you know? You do know! We will be beaten! Jews will be beaten. There will be Jewish pogroms.

Thank you, dad, said Arthur. I thought so myself.

What did Abram Kovner, a retired shohet[1], recall shortly before his death:

"In that time our shohet was called just that: Shohet. Max Shohet. He was a small thin man, with thin hands. And with glasses. Very skillful and calm. I was then his student, a helper, that is. He was kind, that Max.

And then one day they bring us a box on a cart. A wooden box. And they say: this is from the Dutch Schultz. Do it right. And these are two guys, strong guys like that, and they look like typical gangsters. So they open the lid and take out the package. Large bundle, long. The man in the bundle is swaddled.

They carry him by the legs and shoulders to our backyard, where, poultry is slaughtered, or cattle. And they say:

"This," they say, "is a Jew who has betrayed our people and wants to doom them to death. He figured out how to destroy America. And then we all will be murdered for it. Do you understand what a bastard he is? Of these two, one was frightening, while the second looked cute and young, but with a shoulder span of two yards. And he says it in a sweet voice:

"He taught Malcolm X and Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. He was teaching them and had finally taught how to destroy America together with us. Do you know at all what is happening around?

Well, they said something more like that there: it's cold on the skin. And they said that the Lubavitcher Rebbe himself approved this matter saying that it is necessary. And all sorts of other details. If I would not have heard it on my own, I would think that this was black slander. But I heard, and Max heard.

And in the end they warned us that if we didn't do everything right, then the Dutchman Schultz ordered finish us right there.

This is how we saw Saul Alinsky for the first and last time. His mouth was shut and he didn't even squirm. Apparently, he took it as it was.

"The Lubavitcher Rebbe said it was a sacred sacrifice like that of Isaac who brought his son to the slaughter as a sacrifice to God: for the life of our people. Otherwise, it will be a mortal sin on you, and on us too.

Max asks "Why should namely me do the slaughter?" And one of them, who is more terrible, explains, like to an idiot, that everything must be done kosher. It's impossible otherwise – and he stared at Max for a long time with a particular expression. Then he took a revolver out of his pocket, though it was obvious that it was redundant.

We put this Alinsky in the right place, Max put a basin for blood under his neck. And the terrible one of the two guys told me to bring some cans: to transfuse the blood. He said it was necessary.

Alinsky lies quietly, back up, face down, cheeks blue and sweat is pouring down them. Max lifted his head and cut his throat, it just crunched. Our knives are like a razor, one move and that's it.

He twitched, and I hold his legs, as it should be, so that all the blood flow out and everything be kosher. And the dark blood hit the tin basin, and it spurts, splashed out in a stream, like from a calf. And foam was on top of it.

He twitched for another minute and fell silent completely. And Max and I poured the blood into cans and gave it to them. And Max asked so quietly why they need it.

Then the second one, young burly man, explains:

Have you heard of the blood libel? Black anti-Semitic slander as though Jews add the blood of Christian babies to matzah?

Well, we've heard something like this...

"Pesach is coming soon," the young one says. "So the good people decided to bake matzah in advance. Yes, not simple, but with this blood.

Max turned white all over and says:

"Are you out of your mind there?" Whom are you going to give it to?

And the scarecrow smiles with his crooked terrible smile and says:

"That's it. You think right. We will give it to all kinds of scum. They have deserved it. Let those dogs partake of the blood of their god. He Who is Above, he will forgive us. He is a cool and correct guy. And we will screw and trample into scum all sorts of scum and traitors with this treat. All those socialists with communists, faggots with whores, all these Jewish fighters for the victory of black-assed people and Muslims, for the equality of idiots with sages, parasites with hard workers. Let the left trash eat themselves until they drop dead.
